Serum 2 has a Linux build now — what to check before you install it
Xfer Records put a Linux beta in front of registered users. It is a real port with real system requirements, not a wrapper.

One of the most widely used commercial synthesizers finally has a native Linux beta. Xfer Records made a Serum 2 Linux build available to registered users, which closes a gap Linux producers have worked around for a decade with compatibility layers.
Who can get it
It is for existing registered owners, downloaded from the same account area you use for Windows and macOS builds. It is labelled a beta: expect it to behave like one.
The requirements that will actually stop you
Two things eliminate a lot of machines before you start:
- AVX2 CPU support. Anything roughly 2014-or-newer on Intel and AMD has it. Older Xeon workstations and some low-power chips do not.
- A recent glibc (2.38 or newer). This is the one that bites. Long-term-support distributions ship older glibc on purpose. If you are on a conservative LTS release, the plugin will refuse to load and the error will look like a missing library rather than an OS-version problem.
What to expect from a beta plugin on Linux
- Format. Linux hosts want VST3; make sure your DAW is scanning the right directory.
- Presets. Keep your preset folder on a path both your other machines and this one can reach, or you will rebuild your library twice.
- Bug reports are worth filing. Beta cycles on niche platforms are decided by how many usable reports arrive. Include distro, kernel, glibc, host and a reproduction.
Why a Linux port matters
Linux is where a lot of low-latency audio work already happens — Pipewire and Jack have been stable for years, and hardware-limited studios use it because it does not force upgrades. What Linux has lacked is commercial plugin support. Every mainstream instrument that ships a native build makes the platform slightly less of a science project.
