Who is DJ S.N.J.?
DJ S.N.J. is a producer from Japan who mainly focuses on making samples. Instead of only finished beats, his work centers on the sounds other producers build songs from, which makes him a natural fit for a sample catalog like Sampledex.
S.N.J. has built a small but fast-growing following on Instagram and YouTube, quickly pulling ahead of many of his peers and gaining traction in the underground scene. That momentum is what caught the attention of Sampledex's CEO, who saw his content and reached out directly. You can hear his work on his YouTube channel (opens in a new tab) and follow him on Instagram (opens in a new tab).
What did Sampledex announce?
S.N.J. joins Sampledex as a contributor, which means he'll create sound packs for the Sampledex catalog. His first release is scheduled for this month, bringing his sample-focused production style to Sampledex users.
The deal is non-exclusive, and that applies to the packs themselves. S.N.J. can sell the same packs anywhere he wants, not just through Sampledex, so producers will be able to find his sounds on other stores and platforms too.
What does a non-exclusive contributor deal mean?
For producers wondering how these deals work, here's the short version:
- Non-exclusive: the creator can sell or license the same kind of work elsewhere. They aren't locked to one company.
- Exclusive: the company is the only place that can sell or distribute that work, usually in exchange for better terms or promotion.
Non-exclusive deals are common in the sample world because they let producers grow their audience on several platforms at once. If you're new to how sample packs and licensing work, our guide on how to sample music legally covers the basics.
