Why Is Sha Ray and DJ Haram's Critical Thot So Iconic?

A title that stopped critics cold, formats that sold out, and a debut built entirely over DMs. Here's why Critical Thot became one of Backwoodz Studioz's standout records of 2026, and what's on it.

Some albums win you over before you press play. Critical Thot, the collaboration between Bay Area rapper Sha Ray and producer DJ Haram, did it with three words. Then the music backed it up.

What makes Critical Thot iconic?

The title. Stereogum's Tom Breihan wrote that if they "handed out awards for album-title wordplay," the two "would have to clear off some shelf space," calling it "the best title I've seen in a minute." It's a pun on "critical thought" that tells you exactly what you're getting: sharp, funny and unapologetic.

It sold out. UK record shop Boomkat lists the CD, gatefold LP and cassette as out of stock. For a debut album on an independent label, that says a lot about demand.

It flips the script. Boomkat describes it as "bold, unapologetic sex raps" over "heady but hard-hitting industrial-tinged beats," and recommends it to fans of Gangsta Boo, Debby Friday and BbyMutha. Sha Ray said the writing was shaped by both artists' "overlapping experiences working as women in the music industry."

It's a debut that doesn't sound like one. Critical Thot is Sha Ray's official first album, but she arrives fully formed.

How did Sha Ray and DJ Haram meet?

DJ Haram saw Sha Ray perform in Brooklyn in 2022. "She gave an incredible performance, so later on when she slid in my DMs asking for beats, I was already on board," Haram said.

They met again at an Armand Hammer and DJ Haram show in Los Angeles. They didn't record anything that day, but it started a long-distance partnership. The whole album was made remotely: Haram sent beats from Brooklyn, and Sha Ray sent back demos and notes from the Bay Area.

Who is DJ Haram?

DJ Haram is a New Jersey-born producer and electronic musician. She's half of the duo 700 Bliss with poet and rapper Moor Mother, and her 2025 solo album Beside Myself (Hyperdub) was critically acclaimed. She has worked with BbyMutha, Fever Ray, Ghais Guevara and Armand Hammer, and made beats for billy woods, ELUCID and Fielded.
