Harry Styles debuts a song for Liam Payne, Fontaines D.C. and The Avalanches drop albums, Iron Maiden plots 2027, and where to catch shows.

It is the weekend of Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18, 2026, and music news has been busy since Friday. A new Harry Styles song debuted at Madison Square Garden. New Music Friday brought albums from Fontaines D.C., @ and The Avalanches. Iron Maiden announced 2027 dates. Shows run from Red Rocks to an electronic-music festival in Athens. Here is what is happening, with links to the original reporting.
What new song did Harry Styles play for Liam Payne?
At his Madison Square Garden residency show on Friday night, Harry Styles used the encore to debut "What Is Enough," an unreleased acoustic song he said he wrote "about two years ago" for his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne. Friday was the second anniversary of Payne's death. Variety (opens in a new tab) reports that it was a sparse ballad addressed directly to Payne. The BBC (opens in a new tab) also covered the debut. No studio release has been announced.
Which new albums came out this weekend?
Friday, October 16 was a big release day. These are the records critics featured most:
- Fontaines D.C. — Dopamine Chamber (XL Recordings). This is the band's fifth album. Official Charts (opens in a new tab) calls it their most experimental era yet. They launched it with a show at London's Roundhouse after what the band called a "very tough year," which included the death of their manager Trevor Dietz in June.
- @ — Autosmile (4AD). Paste (opens in a new tab) says the duo made it by texting music files back and forth.
- The Avalanches — No Bad Memories. This is a new record from the sample-collage group, which is relevant to anyone who reads this site for sampling.
- Sophia Stel — The Greatest Album of All Time (A24 Music). It was one of the five picks on NPR Music's New Music Friday (opens in a new tab).
- Also out: Rachel Chinouriri, Max Richter, Ashe, Jacques Greene, Andy Shauf, Geologist, Bruce Cockburn and June McDoom, according to Exclaim!'s release list (opens in a new tab).
Among the singles, Shygirl released "Mantra" from her album Swallow!, due November 6 on Because Music, according to FEMMUSIC (opens in a new tab).
Which tours were announced?
Iron Maiden announced a 2027 North American tour that includes a headlining set at the Sonic Temple festival. Fans did not expect it after the band's earlier talk of a hiatus. Louder (opens in a new tab) quoted the band: "We can't get everywhere but we can try!" Far Out (opens in a new tab) also listed new 2027 tours from Karly Hartzman and Eric Clapton.
Where is live music happening this weekend?
- Denver: 303 Magazine (opens in a new tab) lists Sammy Virji at Red Rocks and Afrojack at Mission Ballroom on Friday, Chief Keef and Sammy Rae & The Friends on Saturday, and Gorillaz at Ball Arena on Sunday.
- San Diego: Mission Bayfest (opens in a new tab) runs October 16–18.
- Athens: The Hybrid Horizons Festival (opens in a new tab) at Megaron combines live instruments with electronics, spatial sound and AI. A guest-composer concert takes place Saturday, and a closing concert of eight newly commissioned works takes place Sunday.
- Las Vegas: Metallica's Sphere run continues. Louder (opens in a new tab) has footage of the band performing ...And Justice for All.

What else is happening in music news?
- My Chemical Romance signed with Warner Chappell for publishing, according to MusicNewsletter.com (opens in a new tab).
- John Lydon called his former Sex Pistols bandmates "deceitful, lying hyenas" and "a karaoke band," as reported by Far Out (opens in a new tab).
- Liam Gallagher said he doesn't understand the Fontaines D.C. hype: "They don't have any tunes."
- Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple is recovering from 10-hour open-heart surgery, according to Louder (opens in a new tab).
- Olivia Rodrigo told Apple Music's Zane Lowe that Kendrick Lamar's "Humble" inspired a track on her latest record.
What does this mean for producers?
Two things stand out. The Avalanches album is a reminder that sample-heavy records still get major releases, so it is a good weekend to brush up on how sample clearance works. The Athens festival also shows AI and spatial audio moving into concert halls as tools composers use, not replacements for them.
