How to actually listen to billy woods' lyrics

His writing is called dense, cryptic and difficult. It is none of those things once you know what he is doing. Six habits that make the catalog open up.

The most common complaint about billy woods is that you cannot follow him. The most common reason is that people are listening for a narrative when he is writing in scenes.

Six things that help.

1. Expect cuts, not stories

woods writes the way films edit. A line establishes a place, the next line jumps somewhere else, and the connection is emotional rather than sequential. Stop waiting for the sentence that ties it together — the tie is the accumulated mood.

2. Follow the objects

His verses are full of physical detail: food, currency, furniture, weather, brand names, weapons, paperwork. Those objects carry the argument. Track them and the abstract lines land.

3. Know the vantage point

The label's own biography (opens in a new tab) describes a childhood split between Africa and the West Indies as "the second child of a Jamaican intellectual and a would-be Marxist revolutionary," followed by an adult life in New York. Diaspora, empire and displacement are not occasional topics — they are the default frame.

4. Take the jokes seriously

Backwoodz described GOLLIWOG as weaving "horror, humor, surrealism and Afropessimism" together. The humor is load-bearing. When a line is funny, it is usually also the thesis of the verse.

5. Let the producer tell you the tone

The same writing sounds different depending on who is behind it. Kenny Segal gives it space, Preservation gives it dislocation, Messiah Musik gives it patience. If a verse is not landing, listen again to the beat and ask what mood it is asking for.

6. Read the tracklist as a text

Titles like "Jumpscare," "A Doll Fulla Pins," "Lead Paint Test" and "Golgotha" are not throwaways. They frame the verses. On a woods record, the tracklist is a table of contents.

The practical version

Play an album twice back to back. Do nothing else while the second pass runs. Almost everyone who says woods finally "clicked" is describing that second listen.
